Short logline: A young, successful detective dies in a mysterious, brutal stabbing in a Perth suburb. It is up to his close friend, and fellow detective Oswald Mallory, along with his assistant Gregory Fraud, to pick up the pieces in a very personal case.

Characters:

Oswald Mallory: Main detective, an alcoholic who is both determined and ambitious.

Gregory Fraud: Oswald’s assistant, in many ways he is more composed than him, and receives some information first.

Cameron Spieth: A young teenager who was the only witness to the stabbing.

Boss: Chief Detective who calls Oswald, but we never see him in the film.

Actors: Damon Keizer as Oswald. Michael Guerrini as Gregory. Conor Wall as Cameron.

Act 1

A young detective name Oswald Mallory awakes from his desk. He wears a suit, top hat, and his notes are laid out in a mess on his desk. He takes a sip of his liquor, and shakes his head to re-focus. The camera focuses on the title of his paper; “27 year old, head detective Hayden Grimes killed in Fremantle with 13 stab wounds to chest”. He is gravely upset with the loss of a good friend. Oswald has a brief phone conversation with his assistant, Gregory Fraud, in relation to the case, before deciding upon a meeting at the scene of the crime. The Two detectives meet near scene of the crime. The body is surrounded by police tape. Gregory hands Oswald evidence, and states key details of the case. He says that there was in fact only one witness to the crime, a young teenager who is named Cameron. Fraud soon leaves as he receives a call. The witness then arrives and Oswald interviews him briefly and takes notes of his answers. Oswald enters his office, and makes a call to his Boss in relation to the case. He examines the evidence that he received earlier that day. Slowly he grows tired and weary, in a drunken and delusional state; due to his personal connection with the case. Mallory then falls asleep…

Act 2

Once asleep, the detective has a vivid dream, involving his assistant killing grimes. He then awakes, and has a shower to freshen up, only to have a hallucination of the water becoming blood. He gets ready to go out, and walks the streets at night toward an unknown destination, it seems as though he is being watched. He lights a smoke, and is in thought when a mysterious car drives past, and a letter was thrown out, at his direction. The letter adds another element of suspicion to the circumstance, as it gives him information on where and when to meet an unknown individual, if he wishes to solve the crime. Oswald begins the journey home, on the way buying a coffee. It still seems as though he is being followed, shadows are everywhere. He enters his home, and begins work at his desk. Smoke from the coffee rise past is glaring, tired eyes. He is deep in though trying to unravel the growing mystery of the gruesome murder. Not long after taking a sip of alcohol, a strange knock on the door is heard. Another letter is there, and a silhouette is spotted, adding more confusion to the growing grimes saga. When asleep that night, Oswald has another dream, this time about the last letter. A loud telephone call wakes him up the next morning. It is Fraud, who describes a press conference that will be held involving the two detectives at noon that day. The interviewers are keen to interrogate the detectives on their somewhat controversial closeness to their case, which may in fact give them the edge required to solve it.

Act 3

That Night, Mallory leaves his house to meet the person responsible for the letters, taking his gun He drives to the address of the meeting place; knocking on the door with nervous hands. When there is no answer he takes it upon himself to enter with caution. Assistant detective Freud is waiting for him. Oswald had his suspicions, but finds it hard to believe his close detective could be responsible for the crime. However, both detectives are double-crossed by a seemingly impossible suspect; the witness. An unexpected visit from the young killer leaves both detectives dead, and leaves many questions to be answered.

Rough Plot Description

Our short film has been heavily influenced by my, and my partners 2 favourite film noir’s watched in class; Australian film ‘the square’ and short detective noir ‘hard boiled’. Our film will attempt to replicate a majority of the major themes within these two texts, along with the film noir style in general. It will follow a detective and his efforts to complete a case involving a good friend of his. Like any film noir, he is double-crossed. Much of the names, settings and details of the story will be sure to change, but the basics are outlined below.

Basic plot-line draft

A detective, named Oswald Mallory (played by Damon) awakes from his desk. He is wearing a suit, a top hat, and his detective notes are laid out in a mess on the desk. He takes a sip of his liquor, shakes his head to re-focus and get back on the job. The camera focuses on his paper’s title: “ 27 year old, head detective Hayden grimes killed in Northbridge with 13 stab wounds in chest”. He reads for a few seconds, shakes his head, and smacks his paper on his desk. “ He was a good man, an asset to the team” Mallory is just about to light a cigarette, when the phone rings. “Detective Mallory here”. “ Yeah I’m heading there now ” He talks to his assistant for a short time in relation to the case, and then hangs up. Mallory walks out of his office and leaves his house, heading to the scene of the crime. (25 sec)

Next scene

Mallory approaches his assistant, Gregory fraud, they shake hands and Gregory gives him a number of items in a zip-locked bag (evidence). They look towards the dead man surrounded by tape, lying on the ground. Mallory: “ I can’t believe he is gone… a great man taken too soon” Gregory: “ Yeah it’s a loss to us all partner… but we have to put the emotions aside and focus on the case” They take a few photos with a small camera. Gregory: “Boss says their was only one witness; a teenager… 17 years old by the name of Cameron (played by another media student or classmate) . He will be here shortly.” Just before the witness arrives, Fraud leaves as he receives a call. The witness arrives and Mallory interviews him briefly on what he saw, as he takes notes in a notepad. He thanks him, and says they will stay in touch before they go their separate ways. As Mallory walks away, it seems as though he is being watched… (40 sec)

Next scene

Oswald enters his office, and makes a call to his boss over the phone… “ Yes sir, we took some photo’s just trying to piece it all together… Correct, 13 stab wounds with minor lacerations to the face, very suspicious, someone was certainly out to get hi ……… I’m about to examine the evidence and will get back to you with any significant findings… Ok goodbye.” Mallory examines the evidence, which includes; Bruce’s coat, hat, wedding ring, smashed pieces of glass and a watch (these could change). He takes notes and shadows are present. He continues to drink alcohol, as time passes (cuts to clock and sound of clock ticking) and he slowly becomes tired, drunk and delusional, before falling asleep on the desk. (30)

Next scene

It is now a dream of Oswald’s, he imagines his assistant Gregory killing Bruce violently. And an extreme close up of a grimace on Gregory’s face is present. Oswald awakes from his nightmare, looking scared and startled. (15 sec) He gets up and walks to the shower, but soon enough, the water turns red, and he has a quick vision of his friend’s body lying in a pool of blood. Again he has another fright. Oswald leaves the shower, dries off and gets ready to go out again. It is night, and he walks the streets at night towards an unknown destination, viewers are concerned, as it again seems like he is being watched/followed. He pauses under a streetlight and lights a smoke. He is idle for a while and appears to be thinking. Streetlights are seen at the end of the road. The car drives past him…. He realises a letter was thrown from the suspicious vehicle. He picks it up; it has his name on the front in cursive writing. The letter is read. And it says: If you want to find the killer to the Grimes case, meet me at 44 Daglish Drive at 11.00 sharp.  He places the letter in his coat, and walks off..  (20 sec)

Next scene

On the way home, he buys a coffee, and again seems like someone is watching him, lots of shadows are present. Oswald enters his home, and makes his way back to his work desk, and the steam/smoke from the coffee rises in front of his face, as his eyes glare at his notes. Again, he looks at the evidence, and is in deep thought, trying to unravel the mystery of the gruesome murder. He looks defeated, and takes a big drink of his alcohol. There is a knock on the door… He arises and opens it… There is no one to be seen. He Looks down and sees yet again another letter. Before reaching for it he looks up and sees a silhouette that disappears into the shadows/bushes. It is entitles to him, and it reads: “You’re next” Oswald looks scared, as he returns to his desk. He continues to drink and becomes immersed in his work, drawing diagrams/sketches and taking more notes: all of possible outcomes and suspects. He soon falls asleep and has another dream. (20 sec)

Next scene

Another dream takes place. The phrase “you’re Next” repeats in his mind, slowly becoming louder and more sinister. While this is happening he imagines the face of Grimes, which slowly gets bigger (this can just be a photo of someone)… He awakes due to a loud telephone call… Oswald grimaces to the loud noise that disturbs his (fatal flaw) drunken sleep. Fraud is on the other line (Could have split image to see the two detectives conversing) Fraud: We have been called to attend a press conference in relation to our Grimes’ death? Mallory: why us? I mean there is a bunch of other people working on this case…. Fraud: They chose us because we were both close friends of his, and think we have a better chance of finding the killer due to our knowledge of grimes and whom he associated with. Mallory: seems reasonable to me, whens the interview? Fraud: Noon at the studio, bring your notes, and whatever you do.. Don’t arrive drunk! Mallory: I think your forgetting who your superior is Gregory… I’ll see you there. (Frame with Fraud closes and Mallory at his desk takes up full screen) He takes a deep breath and seems flustered and overwhelmed. (35 sec)

 Next Scene

Oswald looks at his watch, it is 11:40, and he leaves his house. Cuts to a shot of Oswald driving to the studio (from inside the car) He knocks on a door that says, “interview room” Oswald enters, shakes hand with his partner, they sit at a desk with a microphone. Presumed diegetic sound of interviewers is present, they ask numerous questions, which the detectives take turn to respond to. A question is directed at Freud asking him where he was the night of the crime. He appears nervous and states that he was at a local pub with friends. Interviewer: But You have been seen walking through North-bridge around the time of Grime’s death, can you explain this? Fraud: you have obviously been mistaken for someone else that looks similar to me.. I think we are done here, he leaves in a rush that suggests he may have been responsible for the crime. Oswald looks at him with bewilderment, as if he is struggling to digest the fact it could have been his trustworthy assistant of several years that killed Grimes. (35 sec)

 Next scene

Screen is black with the words “that night…” in the centre. Mallory is again drinking and typing something up, he looks at his watch, it is 10:30. He takes a deep breath, puts on his coat and hat, is just about to leave the room, when he turns back and takes his pistol and puts it in his coat. (10 sec)

Next scene

The Car approaches a house and stops (extreme long shot) Mallory looks at the letter, and says: “this is it” he feels for his gun for peace of mind, and walks towards the house…. Suspenseful music begins to play. He knocks on the door, he looks very nervous, and the music gets louder and faster each time he knocks. There is still no reply by the third set of knocks, so he enters. Eerie music plays. He walks through the house, looking through each room slowly, when from behind we see his assistant, fraud emerge from a room with a gun pointed at his head. Fraud: Turn around Oswald… Oswald freezes and looks shocked, slowly turning around with his hands in the air. Fraud: I always thought u were a step behind, a lousy detective who always found it hard to think ahead. I should have never been your assistant.. Oswald: Why did you kill him?? Fraud: WHY? HA. Do you know how it feels to be inferior to someone for years, who you hate and despise, while all your co-workers are in complete admiration and awe of? He was the person stopping me from becoming the head detective, and reaching my potential. Yeah it was his entire fault…. Along with you. For too long I have been making sure you don’t slip up instead of focusing on MY work… well, that’s about to end… Goodbye detective Mallory (says disdainfully). Oswald: please Gregory… you don’t have to do this, I can help you get to the top, we can hide the murder I promise, please don’t do this to me… Fraud: I’m sorry.. (Almost in tears) Oswald quickly reaches for his won gun, but it is too late. He fires the gun, and Oswald drops dead dramatically. Fraud, now crying, approaches Oswald’s limp body and says to himself… Fraud: (breathing heavily) what have I become…? He then pulls the gun on himself, takes a deep breath It cuts to the shadow of Fraud pulling the trigger on himself, we hear the gunfire, and his shadow drops to the ground next to Oswald’s shadow. The camera zooms out slowly on the two dead detectives, and tragic music plays; this soon turns into police sirens. The film ends, and the credits begin. (60 sec) Total rough duration: 4:50 + credits.
